HOW AND WHY ESSENTIAL OILS WORK

Have you ever wondered how and why essential oils work?
There is a common misconception that essential oils work only because of the placebo effect, but this is so far from the truth! The more you learn about the biology and chemistry behind essential oils it makes sense why they are so effective.
Essential oils are a mixture of hundreds of volatile (they evaporate easily) chemical constituents and compounds found in all plants. Each plant species contains different combinations of compounds, which makes all essential oils powerful and very unique! Each category of constituents is unique in benefits and properties that can work together to impact the body in different ways. This means that no two oils will behave the same, making them each very versatile!

There are three ways to use essential oils: aromatically, topically, and internally. Each method benefits our body in different ways.

Aromatically:

Because of their composition and volatility, as soon as you open a bottle of essential oil, the oil mixes with the air you breathe. This makes it so you can absorb their benefits through your lungs very easily.
When you breathe in essential oils, their odorant compounds (what makes up their aroma) reach your alveoli, along with the oxygen in the air. You have about 700 million alveoli in your lungs; they are thin filters that transfer oxygen from your respiratory system into your bloodstream. Since alveoli are so thin, essential oil molecules get absorbed very easily from your respiratory system into your blood and then travel quickly to all parts of the body!
Essential oils can also affect your limbic system. This system is related to your mood, memory, behavior, and emotions. How does this happen? There are many smell receptors in the lining of your nose, and when you smell something good or bad, these receptors send a response to your brain (like when you instantly gag changing a dirty diaper!). When a scent arrives to the limbic system, your body responds by releasing unique chemicals into your brain, causing a reaction. The sense of smell can have a profound impact on your emotional state and inner desires because it is directly connected to your limbic system!

Topically:

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body? Think of your skin like a sponge; it contains several layers and absorbs everything that is applied through its cells and into the body. The cells that make up your skin are held together through fatty tissue. Coincidentally, essential oils are fat soluble, meaning they are attracted to fat and are absorbed quickly in the skin!

Internally:

Young Living has an entire line of essential oils meant for internal use. These oils make up our Vitality™ line. Our Vitality oils are the same beloved and amazing oils you use topically; the only difference is they are specifically labeled for internal use. It’s easy to use essential oils internally—use them in your favorite recipes, add them to your favorite beverage, or make your own concoction using a veggie capsule!
When essential oils are ingested, they must pass through the liver, which is where fats are metabolized (broken down). After this happens, your blood will carry the small molecules from the liver throughout your whole body before anything is eliminated. As they circulate through the body, they interact with your internal cells and tissues, which is why taking Vitality oils internally is a great way to support your body!
